The Studio for Aesthetic Dentistry gives us Something to Smile About
Your smile is often the first thing people notice. When a smile is beautiful and luminous, it can brighten your face and even soften your demeanour. But since no two smiles are identical, is there really such a thing as the perfect smile?
According to Dr. Ed Phillips, founder of the acclaimed Studio for Aesthetic Dentistry in downtown Toronto, and author of Your Guide to the Perfect Smile, there most certainly is. “A perfect smile is really one that is the correct interpretation of what the patient wants. So if the dentist interprets and delivers it correctly, and it complements the client’s features, then it’s perfect.”
For almost 30 years, Dr. Phillips has worked in the ever-evolving field of aesthetic dentistry, enabling him to offer his clients a different side of the dentist experience. “I had the great opportunity to begin my practice at the Hospital for Sick Children, where I worked with plastic surgeons in recreating cleft palettes, restoring the faces of people born with abnormalities – things that we were never really taught in dental school,” he shares.
This unique experience caused Dr. Phillips to contemplate why teeth play such a central role in shaping one’s appearance. His in-depth research on the topic equipped him with immeasurable expertise and compelled him to focus his practice on the cosmetic facet of the field.
“For me, aesthetic dentistry means trying to find the real architectural, natural beauty of what someone looks like and how their teeth should fit into that picture,” he says.
The result of Dr. Phillips’ hard work is an incredibly successful practice, which enabled him to open his innovative downtown studio. “The studio has given me the opportunity to work at a level where I can make each procedure a masterpiece, in a setting that’s comfortable for the patient.”
The nearly 2000 sq. ft. studio gives visitors the feeling that they’ve stepped into an upscale spa retreat rather than a dentist’s office. Thankfully, this means no more sterile white walls or intimidating dentist chairs. In fact, the unique design has only one dental chair to ensure client privacy and personal one-on-one service. Complete with an on-site, complimentary cosmetic dentistry information centre that provides clients with free information, the small touches help create a friendly, intimate atmosphere.
“I really get to know the people I’m working with, it’s part of the process to really achieve the results that they want,” says Phillips. Instead of them just sitting in a chair and opening their mouths, we get to talk about what they’re looking for or whether the process was successful. I really look forward to that interaction, and I think my clients do too.”
