Fabric is one of the most influential yet often overlooked design elements. Customization of colour, texture and pattern can truly personalize a piece of furniture, whether it’s an antique-style chair with modern blue silk or a gilded sofa with soft cream upholstery. At De Arte, clients have access to a vast selection of Italian fabrics that are readily available for sample in its exclusive library. “There are so many different variations of fabrics that you can use. You just have to know how to tie it all together,” he says.
 
In a world that’s always evolving, you can create looks that illustrate timelessness, but you shouldn’t expect them to transcend time. Pilato’s rule of thumb is to have pieces that last at least five to seven years. After that, homeowners can feel comfortable with a few modifications. While Pilato doesn’t believe in following the latest trends, he does encourage the recent movement of fusing traditional and contemporary.
